How Your Insurance Is Hurting Your Recovery

DO YOU TAKE MY INSURANCE? This is one of the most common questions I get asked. It has become the expectation that all medical services are covered by insurance in some way. The idea of paying out of pocket is so foreign. I mean, it HAS to be best for you to see someone covered under your insurance policy, right? Consider this… The decisions on what treatments are covered & valued by insurance companies are not made by anyone with a medical degree. It is a business - period. There was a time one insurance agent actually told me I would be paid more to slap on a pack of ice or electrical stim and walk away than I would to give an additional 15 min of hands-on, 1-on-1 nerve-muscle retraining...for a patient who just had a NERVE surgery! Here’s why this matters to YOU. If your specialist is being paid by some externally-derived paradigm, they are often tempted to treat you according to that paradigm. Even though it is often NOT necessarily the optimal treatment plan fo...

How I help Women Get Their Pre-baby Body Back in Their Own Time

“You’ve had a baby. You’re not SUPPOSED to be able to do the things you used to do.”  Have you or someone you know been told that one before?  One of my biggest pet peeves!  Your body does change with pregnancy and delivery - it’s such a beautiful thing the woman’s body can do!  But, you are not cursed forever once you have a baby.  There are amazing women running ultramarathons, meeting new physical achievements and living with the freedom to live an active, unlimited life AFTER pregnancy.   What must be understood is that the body is, indeed, different now.  But it is NOT incapable, used up, old news.  If you hear that narrative - leave!  It takes some more work at times, but mostly a new perspective.  Maybe you used to be able to hop out of bed and put your body through a workout first thing.   Now, it may take a little more prep work.  Motherhood is crazy - unpredictable & exhausting.  I know, I’ve been...

Who Do You Call When You're Told You Need Surgery?

I got a call from my sister one day - she'd been dealing with significant shoulder pain for some time. She kept thinking it would resolve with rest & traditional treatment - anti-inflammatories & traditional PT (rotator cuff strengthening, e-stim, ice). Yet, she was still unable to perform the activities she loved. By the time she reached out to me, an MRI was scheduled. "Seems necessary," I reassured. I got another call - the MRI results were in. “They say surgery is my only option if I want to keep active.” She had a torn Rotator Cuff that "must be repaired." The surgeon also wanted to do a “little extra” & move the Biceps tendon, since she pain there, too. What would you do if you were in her shoes, but you had to make the decision on your own… or with Dr. Google? Pretty stressful, I’d say! I mean, if you knew 100% this was the right plan, you’d have a much easier time accepting it, right? What if it’s not the right answer? Do you actually...

DON'T WASTE TIME SEEING THE WRONG SPECIALIST!

⠀ I was at mile 11 of a Half Marathon when it happened. Searing pain in the bottom of my foot. It was like nothing like I had felt before - shoot, I was feeling do good!! ⠀ ⠀ I limped to the finish line, but it left me unable to walk. I knew this was more than normal aches & pains of distance running. I humbled my 40-yr-old self & went to my Dr. She prescribed meds & referred to a specialist. After weeks of waiting & crawling through my house, the response from the "specialist" was, “Well, you DID run a half-marathon...” WHAT?!? I couldn’t walk 2 weeks later - this is NOT normal! Though aware of my knowledge of injuries, she disregarded my questions & concerns. It was clear she was not truly LISTENING to me.⠀ ⠀ If I couldn’t get her to listen & take me seriously with MY background, how would YOU?? You don’t stand a chance. ⠀ ⠀ I took matters into my own hands & found a second opinion. This time, I was treated with respect & was listened...

WHEN IT ALL BEGAN...

I started recognizing common patterns in my patients' bodies when I was a PT in the Air Force. I remember my supervisor jokingly comment after reviewing my notes - “Hey, Capt. Are all your patients in a Right on Left Sacral Torsion?” Even HE noticed it! Fast forward a few months & curiosity lead me to my first course in Postural Restoration. I was hooked! It made so much sense to me & explained so many things I had been noticing. I nearly shouted out in class... “Of course! THIS is why I see so many Right on Left sacral torsions!” So many things that were brushed over in PT school were recognized, appreciated & explained. I felt like I had won the biomechanics lottery! The following day in the clinic started with a new patient. “Capt, I'm seeing you for my knee today, but I also have shoulder pain. Don't worry! I have a 2nd evaluation set up for my shoulder already.” You see, the standard way of doing physical therapy suggests that you evaluate 1 problem...

What is FULL HEALING?

I was a competitive runner through college & young adulthood. It's a talent & source of joy I picked up kind of late in life. I excelled at something many others didn’t & people were noticing! At such a crucial time in my life, I was gaining confidence in who I was by my ability to run long & run fast. I beat the guys in my ROTC unit, drew the attention of my peers & coaches. I was “the runner”. I won the awards. I won the races. I ate, slept, & breathed running. I also struggled w/ body image & perfectionism. I'd only eat when I felt like I'd run enough to deserve it. Clearly, all this running & restrictive eating took a toll on my body. I eventually developed pain in my shins. I denied it & kept on going, until I physically couldn’t run anymore. My brain was smarter than my will & it shut down my ability to run. A few wks before Air Force bootcamp, tests showed stress fractures so far along they could fully fracture w/ even 1 more r...
