Running Injury Prevention Has Improved!

DON'T BE LIKE MY HAIRDRESSER πŸ’‡‍♀️

I was out doing what my mom refers to as her “civic duty” πŸ˜† Sitting in the shampoo chair, getting my hair freshly cut. My stylist and I get to chatting, one of my favorite reasons for going into the salon. She reflected on what a struggle it’s been to get back into an exercise routine. She has dealt with significant knee pain for quite some time but has recently found a new exercise that is giving her hopes of long walks again. She continued to reflect on how much she used to absolutely LOVE running. How good it made her feel. How crummy she felt when she didn’t run. I could relate to what that meant, without even needing details. That all came to a stop for her when she developed knee pain & swelling. She said, “You know, back then, we didn’t know much about running shoes and stuff like that.” Man, that made me sad. I thought, this is exactly why I created this “Running Longevity Course”. We have come so far in Running Health concepts, in Injury Prevention and Recovery. Oh, how I wish I could have been there for her BEFORE she had gotten to this point. How I wish we had known more for her back then. Good thing is that now we know more. Running Longevity requires more than just good shoes and flexible hamstrings. We are imbalanced & asymmetrical. That is a HUGE factor in joint wear & tear. Managing those asymmetries via modifications in habits, strengthening routines, and intentional preparatory work is KEY to maintaining the ability to run for a lifetime. I will discuss this and more in my 6-wk Virtual Running Course this Spring! Weekly Live sessions will start the week of April 10. Pre-recorded supplemental lessons available for a lifetime!

Those "Tricky" Hamstrings (Part 3)

So far, we have discussed the consequences of OVER STRETCHING and the role of the NERVOUS SYSTEM in treating and preventing hamstring injuries.  Now it's time to dive in to the ROTATIONAL component of our hamstrings.   We cannot treat the hamstring group in just one plane of motion.  Look at the diagram and notice that there are some hamstring muscles that attach to the inside (medial) side of the knee, and others that attach to the outside (lateral) side of the knee. When working together, the medial and lateral hamstrings will act in a coordinated manner to bend the knee and extend the hip.   Individually, the medial hamstrings turn the thigh inward (Internal Rotation or IR) and the lateral hamstrings turn the thigh outward (External Rotation or ER).  This means that the hamstrings are also a crucial player in side-to-side and rotational movements.  On the same lines, the hamstrings will act at the upper attachment at the pelvis.  The med...

Those "Tricky" Hamstrings - Part 2

THE ROLE OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM This "epidemic" of recurring hamstring injuries is, in part, due to the under-valued role of the nervous system.  There is often too much focus on the structural "damage" and isolated limitations vs the overall dysfunction. I'm not saying that treating the damaged tissue is not important. But, in order to minimize recurrence, we must look beyond the isolated injury and seek to understand the integrated, "big picture" of the problem. IS IT ACTUAL DAMAGE OR SOMETHING ELSE? One interesting concept to understand is that the tension of our muscles are completely under the control of our nervous system.  Your brain is in constant awareness of the tension of all your muscles.  Unless you change your nervous system, you will continue to sense tightness.  As mentioned in Part 1, stretching isn't necessarily the answer to resolving tension. The relief felt by isolated muscle stretching only lasts for about 20 minutes.   ...

My New Mission & Why I Love It So Much

My New Mission and Why I Love It so Much ⠀ I never thought I would get into sales. It always felt so icky & aggressive to me. I don’t like asking people for help, let alone for money! And I thought the only way to make solid income in a sales job was to be pushy & disingenuous, even if my intentions were pure. Not for me, I always thought. ⠀ ⠀ Then I came across the opportunity to not only sell incredible products that truly help increase the health of those who use them, but also in a way that allows me to stay true to my soul. It is so aligned with me, that I shocked myself one day. “Wow, I can’t believe I just let that all roll off so easily! Like I’ve been in sales for years, or something!” ⠀ ⠀ It shouldn't surprise me... when you are doing something that is fully aligned with who you are, it comes easily! ⠀ ⠀ Here is why I am absolutely loving this new “side gig”. I am as honest & trustworthy as they come. It is not my nature to convince someone to do somet...
